Monster High High School Playset
Although the Monster High High School Playset isn’t a traditional dollhouse, I thought I would review it here, as it is still a miniature building… just a School, rather than a house. I also thought it was relevant, due to the popularity of Monster High at the moment.
This two storied school features exact replicas of the most recognizable rooms from the webisodes, including the creepateria, the casketball court, the mad science classroom and the creepy coffin shaped lockers.
This playset is currently a top seller at Amazon. It is the first Monster High Playset and it was actually created due to fan demand. Matel have done a wonderful job and it is an excellent addition to the existing Monster High range of dolls and accessories.

Famous Dollhouses – Colleen Moore’s Fairy Castle
One of the most famous and also most beautiful dollhouses of all time, is Colleen Moore’s Fairy Castle.
This intricate and elaborate miniature house was the creation of the silent film star Colleen Moore.
Colleen always had a very keen interest in dolls and dollhouses and was fortunate enough to own several elaborate miniature houses as a child.
As an adult, it was her father who suggested that perhaps she should follow her passion and create her own dollhouse. After all, her success as an actress meant that she had the resources needed to create something really fabulous.
From 1928 to 1935 more than 700 people helped Colleen create her dream dollhouse. Her helpers included architects, interior designers, Chinese jade craftsmen and Beverly Hills jewelers.
The final price tag for this amazing dollhouse was almost five hundred thousand dollars… and remember this was back in the 1930s, so that would be an enormous amount in today’s money.
This large 8’7″ x 8’2″ x 7’7″ miniature dwelling contains over 2000 miniature items, including such delights as chandeliers adorned with real diamonds, emeralds and pearls. There is a miniature Royal Doulton Dinner Service, real crystal glasses, paintings and murals painted by Walt Disney and real readable miniature books, including the oldest bible ever written.
Today, the dollhouse which has been renamed the “Fairy Castle” resides in the Museum Of Science And Industry in Chicago. Millions of people from around the world have delighted in viewing the Fairy Castle, since it was donated to the museum in 1949.
History Of The Dollhouse
When we think of a Dollhouse, we mainly think of the popular toy dollhouses of today and big name brands such as Barbie, Fisher-Price and more recently Monster High.
And it is true that in recent years, dollhouses have mainly been the domain of young children and especially young girls.
However… the history of the dollhouse is vast and goes back many years.
Miniature homes complete with furniture, people and animals have been made for thousands of years.
The earliest wooden miniatures were found in Egyptian tombs that were created nearly
five thousand years ago. It’s most likely they were made for religious reasons, not as toys.
The earliest known European dollhouses date back to the 16th century. Once again, these were
not toys. Instead they were the prize possessions of wealthy women. They were very valuable, individually handcrafted dollhouses that were displayed in glass cabinets and were called Baby Houses or Cabinet Houses.
The detailing in these Cabinet Houses was amazing. Not only did they contain miniature furniture and people, they were accurate right down to the very small details including miniature paintings, tapestries and china sets. Many of these fully furnished miniature houses actually cost as much as modest full sized houses!
It wasn’t until around the middle of the 18th century that factory made dollhouses first appeared. Around this time, factories in Germany and England began mass producing toys, which included dollhouses. And then, by the end of the 19th century The Bliss Manufacturing Company, in the United States, was making American dollhouses.
Up until World War One, Germany produced the most sought after dollhouses and miniatures, which were exported to Central Europe, Britain and North America. However, Germany’s involvement in World War One caused a drastic drop in production and new manufacturers in other countries stepped in to fill the gap.
The TynieToy Company made authentic replicas of antique houses and furniture. Other notable companies of the early 2oth century were Roger Williams Toys and Wisconsin Toy Co. Around this time, miniatures were also produced in Japan. Mostly by copying original German designs.
It was after World War Two that dollhouse production began to happen on a much larger scale.
The detailed craftsmanship of the earlier houses, understandably, wasn’t present in these mass produced houses. They were however affordable for the masses. By the 1950s, the price was such that most girls in developed western countries were now able to own one.
